How Many People Does a Tray of Indian Food Feed?

Half or full is only part of the answer. Use Mehfill’s tray depths, serving ranges and dish-by-dish examples to plan a meal for 15, 25 or 50 guests.

When you are ordering Indian food for a party, “one full tray” sounds like a useful quantity. It becomes useful only when you know the tray’s depth, the dish inside it and its role in the meal. A curry served alongside several other dishes is a different planning problem from biryani that is the main meal.

This guide explains Mehfill’s published tray ranges for Toronto and the GTA. Use it to narrow the choices and prepare an order brief. The calculations below are transparent planning examples, not kitchen-confirmed orders or universal portions for other caterers.

How many servings are in a half or full tray?

Mehfill lists three depths for each footprint: shallow, medium and deep. Ask for both the footprint and depth when comparing quotes. The current party-tray menu is the source for this table. Prices are in Canadian dollars per tray before HST; final dish selection and extras are confirmed in the quote.

Mehfill tray sizes, approximate servings and starting prices
Tray formatApproximate servingsVegetarianNon-vegetarian
Half Shallow5-10C$65C$70
Half Medium15C$75C$85
Half Deep20-25C$85C$95
Full Shallow25-35C$105C$120
Full Medium35-45C$125C$140
Full Deep45-55C$140C$150

A half shallow tray and a half deep tray have very different published capacities. Likewise, a full shallow tray is not interchangeable with a full deep tray. These labels describe Mehfill’s menu; they are not standard serving guarantees across restaurants.

Does a tray serving equal a complete meal?

No. A tray of curry represents servings of that curry. It does not automatically include rice, bread, another main, dessert or drinks. Two different dishes each labelled for 25 people could be part of one meal for the same 25 guests. Adding their labels and calling the result “50 meals” would misunderstand the order.

Start with three questions: who will eat this dish, how much of the meal should it provide, and what else will be served? A vegetarian main may be the main meal component for some guests and a second choice for others. Allocate it with both groups in mind; do not assume only vegetarian guests will take it.

How many people does a biryani tray feed?

Use the confirmed serving range for the exact biryani and tray depth you order. Mehfill’s table above is a general tray framework; it does not publish a separate guaranteed biryani yield. Tell the kitchen whether biryani is the main meal or a rice choice alongside curries, and ask it to confirm the appropriate tray and accompaniments.

For a biryani-led meal, the order brief should identify the biryani selection, its intended diners, any separate vegetarian meal, and requested raita or sides. For a mixed curry-and-rice meal, record how many people will share each main and whether both plain rice and biryani are being offered. The same headcount can produce different quantities in those two situations.

Do not convert a chicken-curry tray into a guessed number of chicken pieces, kilograms or biryani portions. Those measurements are not supplied by the published tray chart. Ask for them if they matter to your order.

Tray planning examples for 15, 25 and 50 guests

Assumption: everyone in the example is intended to receive a serving of one selected dish. These examples compare the published ranges for that dish only. They do not prescribe the quantity of every dish in a full meal, account for seconds or establish a guaranteed yield.

Single-dish capacity comparisons to discuss with the kitchen
People eating this dishPublished-range comparisonQuestion to confirm
15A half medium lists approximately 15 servings. A half shallow lists only 5–10.Is the medium appropriate for this dish as part of our meal, and do we need an allowance for seconds?
25A half deep lists 20–25; 25 is its upper end. A full shallow lists 25–35.Which format suits the intended portion and the rest of our menu?
50A full deep lists 45–55, with 50 inside the range. Two full shallow trays total a listed 50–70 servings of the same dish.Would one deep or two shallow trays better match the portions, access and service arrangement?

Here is the arithmetic behind the last row: two trays multiplied by 25–35 listed servings gives 50–70 listed servings. That is a comparison of published capacities, not a recommendation to over-order. The kitchen may recommend a different combination after reviewing the selected dish and the full meal.

For a mixed group of 25, suppose the organiser records eight vegetarian guests and 17 other guests. That information alone is not enough to order eight portions of a vegetarian main: some of the other 17 may want it too. Send the guest split and proposed dishes together, then confirm which items must cover the whole group and which are allocated to particular diners.

Build a dish-by-dish order before counting trays

Use one line per dish. This makes it easier to spot missing rice or bread, a main that has to serve more people than expected, or an unconfirmed dietary meal.

How do tray prices compare with a per-person package?

A tray price buys the confirmed tray item. A per-person package specifies a menu framework. Compare the complete food list and service scope before comparing totals. Rice, bread, dessert, staffing or equipment may be separate on one option and part of the framework on another.

For example, one vegetarian half medium at C$75 plus one non-vegetarian half medium at C$85 totals C$160.00 for those two trays. With C$40 standard GTA delivery, that becomes C$200 before HST and any additional items. It is not a published complete-meal package for 15 guests: rice, bread, other dishes and the suitability of the two tray quantities still need review. This calculation shows how to read a quote, not what every group of 15 should order.

Compare the food plan with Mehfill’s buffet package inclusions, then use the party trays versus buffet guide for the difference in setup and host responsibilities.

Other questions before ordering party trays

Can I order for fewer than 15 guests?

The tray chart includes formats with fewer than 15 listed servings because a single dish may serve only part of a group. Mehfill’s standard catering minimum is 15 guests; a small tray’s serving range does not override that minimum. Boxed lunches have a separate 10-meal minimum. Confirm the appropriate order route for your group.

Should I add a fixed percentage for leftovers?

Do not add an automatic buffer to every tray. State whether you want seconds or planned leftovers and ask the kitchen to account for that once across the complete menu. Increasing every dish independently can change the order more than you intended.

Can trays accommodate different dietary requirements?

Share the specific requirements and the number of diners before choosing dishes. Vegetarian, vegan and Jain are different requests, and a menu label is not an individual allergy assessment. Use Mehfill’s dietary planning information and have the chef confirm the selected order.

How far ahead should I enquire?

The routine final menu and guest-count deadline is 24 hours before the event. Urgent enquiries need at least 4 hours’ notice and explicit availability confirmation. Review same-day catering and delivery requirements before relying on a short-notice order.

Turn the tray comparison into a confirmed order

Send your guest count, dish worksheet, address, date and serving time through the Mehfill catering enquiry form. Mention whether you want a full meal, extra dishes for food you are already providing, or a specific amount of leftovers. The useful final answer is a confirmed dish list with quantities and charges, rather than a tray count detached from the meal.
